For those of you that follow me on Twitter you know by now that I do top 5 NBA related lists that vary from me ranking players, teams, accomplishments etc. from the past and present. I have been doing that for a few months now and have received plenty of feedback (positive and negative) about my lists and I appreciate all of it. And then one day I decided that I was going to do something a little different than just a top 5 list. Instead of doing a list where I rank the top 5 players in the NBA or a list where I rank the top 5 best players at a particular position I decided I was going to go a little less traditional and rank each franchise in the NBA!
Now before I put this idea into action I'd be lying if I said I wasn't reluctant to do this because I certainly was. We all can get a little unhappy sometimes when we feel our favorite NBA team does not get the credit they deserve. It's part of being a sports fan and the simple fact that I knew I would get negative responses from NBA fans about how they believe their team is too low on the rankings gave me second thoughts about doing the franchise rankings. Nonetheless the NBA franchise rankings were completed and I got the response that I thought I knew I would get. I obviously got the negative responses from fans (mostly Celtics fans) who thought their team was lower than their liking, however I also received tons of compliments on my franchise rankings which is why I ultimately decided to just go ahead and create these NBA franchise rankings.
The process of creating these franchise rankings was a long and tough process. So many things were considered for these franchise rankings and I know the popular way of thinking about it is just to look at the number of championships a certain NBA franchise has but there are way more attributes of defining a sports franchise besides championships. Sorry Celtics fans but bringing up "17>16" doesn't mean much to me and it's not just because I am a Lakers fan and have been one my whole life, but it is actually because I considered ALL of the following: the amount of years each franchise has existed, total franchise wins, franchise win percentage, playoff appearances, total number of playoffs wins, win percentage in the playoffs, total number of winning seasons (including .500 seasons), consecutive seasons without making the playoffs and winning a series in the playoffs, consecutive seasons making the postseason, consecutive season making the finals, total finals appearances, and last but not least, championships. After considering each and every one of these categories for all 30 NBA franchises, this was my list of my NBA franchise rankings:
1.Lakers
2. Celtics
3. Spurs
4. Sixers
5. Bulls
6. Pistons
7. Rockets
8. Thunder
9. Blazers
10. Suns
11. Jazz
12. Knicks
13. Bucks
14. Hawks
15. Warriors
16. Heat
17. Pacers
18. Mavericks
19. Magic
20. Cavaliers
21. Nuggets
22. Wizards
23. Nets
24. Kings
25. Pelicans
26. Grizzlies
27. Hornets
28. Raptors
29. Timberwolves
30. Clippers
